Workshops

On 26 November 2012, 2 workshops will be organised:

  • Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment – research needs?
  • Assessing social impacts in the product life cycle

Participation in these workshops is free but requires registration for the symposium. Both workshops will be recorded on video, which will be uploaded to the symposium homepage. There will be 1-2 rapporteurs to give feedback to symposium plenum session for a discussion there.

1. Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment – research needs?

In literature, Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) has been conceptualised as a combination of LCA, SLCA, and LCC. With the publication of guidelines for performing LCA, SLCA and LCC, this could indicate that the question of how to perform an LCSA has been solved - but is anything missing? The objective of this workshop is to define a research agenda for the further development of LCSA.

A full description of the workshop, including details of the programme and practicalities, can be downloaded here.

2. Assessing social impacts in the product life cycle

Since the publication of the UNEP-SETAC Guidelines on Social LCA 2009, contributions have been made to elaborate this proposed methodological framework. Reviews of the literature point to several challenges when applying the methodological steps of Environmental LCA to social impacts, e.g. the objective and validity of capturing social impacts throughout the phases of the product life cycle. The workshop will review current efforts and seek to define an updated research agenda.
